Suprima Fan Seal 238147 

The Suprima fan seal 238147 (or for some versions, 238148) has been unhelpfully discontinued by Baxi, which I would imagine is why you are here reading this page … ;)

This part hardens and perishes with age and needs replacing occasionally, e.g. at an annual service or when a failed flue fan is repaired. If yours has failed from hardening or perishing, the correct advice is to fit a new boiler. 

I’ve heard of the flue seal from a Suprima HE being used instead but this strikes me as possibly a bad idea as the Suprima HE is a condensing boiler and the flue gas temperature is a lot lower. The higher flue temperature of a standard Suprima could possibly burn the seal intended for a Suprima HE which could make this seal unsuitable, even if it fits.

I have discovered however, that the flue fan outlet seal from a Johnson and Starley Economaire warm air boiler fits. This seal is quite different in appearance but the dimensions are the same and as Economaire is a non-condensing boiler, the seal performs the same task in the warm air boiler (sealing the flue fan outlet) at the same temperature as in the Suprima, so probably works perfectly well.

I feel duty-bound to point out his part is not however, approved by either Baxi-Potterton or by Johnson and Starley for use in the Potterton Suprima boiler so if you fit one and it all goes horribly wrong, don’t expect any support from either Baxi-Potterton of Johnson and Starley, or from me! We will all both point out it is not the correct part and the boiler should have been scrapped. 

The Johnson and Starley part number is S01394 and its available from lots of on-line boiler spares suppliers if you have a search should you wish to try it. The cost is about £10.
